Guided Puglia Bike Tour

Guided Puglia Bike Tour
Puglia is one of the least explored regions of Italy, offering a coastline bathed by two crystal blue seas: the Adriatic and the Ionian. The region has the rustic tranquility of the Italian countryside mixed with cities that were canvases for Baroque architectural grandeur. We stay in spectacular hotels; 5-star resorts with spas and private beaches. We cycle to secluded sandy beaches and swim in a grotto. We explore the trulli (conical beehive houses) of Alberobello. We visit a mozzarella producer and an olive oil mill. We spend an evening with an Italian chef at an exclusive cooking class. Our route takes us through sundrenched whitewashed coastal villages that feel more Greek than Italian. We combine breathtaking scenery, over the top accommodations, and cultural events to make for a perfect Italian vacation.
Day 1 Monopoli  We rendezvous at the Bari airport and shuttle to our accommodations. Il Melograno is a luxury five-star hotel and spa housed in a sixteenth century masseria (stone farmhouse). A short warm-up ride leads to an ancient fishing harbor and fortress in the town of Monopoli. Dinner is in a dazzling location. The Grotta Palazzese restaurant is located in a limestone grotto in a coastal cliff, 23 mt (74 ft) above the sea.

Day 2 Polignano al Mare  A loop ride takes us through olive groves and farmland on our way to Polignano al Mare, a whitewashed village with a blue flag sandy beach. Blue flag is the gold standard for beaches. Bring your bathing suit if you want to test the waters. Later we shuttle you to Monopoli for dinner on your own.

Day 3 Savelletri di Fasano  While famous for its baroque masterpieces, Puglia is also known for simple stone farmhouses called trulli. These beehive shaped buildings have a cylindrical base with a conical limestone-tiled roof. We cycle to Alberobello, the ultimate trulli town. We visit the historic center and then cycle to a mozzarella producer to learn how fresh dairy milk is transformed into Italy’s favorite cheese. After lunch we ride to Borgo Egnazia, a luxury resort close to the sea. Tonight we have a cooking class followed by dinner under the stars.

Day 4 Ostuni  A long gradual climb leads to Cisternino, a delightful whitewashed coastal town often described as one of the prettiest towns in Italy. Continuing south we arrive in Ostuni, the “White City” par excellence, with an exceptional location overlooking the sea. The city of Ostuni is a jumble of staircases, small streets, alleys, and arches. Exploring the town will be easy from our hotel in the historic center. In the late afternoon we visit an olive oil mill. Dinner on your own.

Day 5 Otranto  We shuttle by van to the city of Lecce, known as the “Florence of the South” due to its remarkable architecture. Lecce is the capital of Italian baroque. Virtually every building is embellished with a playful mix of mythological creatures, floral patterns and delicate carvings. From Lecce we cycle to a seaside grotto and swim hole. Legend has it that a Greek goddess used to bathe in the translucent waters of the Grotto della Poesia (Caves of Poetry). Today, you can join exuberant Italians and leap into the blue waters. Our ride ends at the Tenuta Centoporte, a four-star resort and spa near Otranto. For dinner we shuttle you into town. Otranto is a historic port with an inviting beach.

Day 6 Leuca  We follow a coastal road south past secluded beaches and steep limestone cliffs. We stop in Castro, a seaside town with a medieval center and marina full of fishing boats. Our destination is Leuca, the southernmost tip of Puglia. Bring your bathing suit for a cool break. For a long ride, cycle back to Otranto. For a more leisurely day shuttle back in the van.

Day 7 Shuttle to Bari  After breakfast we shuttle you back to the Bari airport or train station.
