Self-Guided Tuscan Coast Bike Tour Wineries and Castles
La Rocca Castle, Campiglia Marittima
In the 12th century the Della Gherardesca family became the Counts of Campiglia and needed a castle to consolidate their strength. Between the 12th and 14th centuries the family built their fortress at the highest point in town. Today the castle houses a museum with artifacts from recent excavations.
Bolgheri Castle, Bolgheri
At Caprilli you can find three generations working hard to run the family winery. This small winery produces 70,000 bottles per year including Italy’s best red wine, the Brunello di Montalcino. The winery also makes their own extra virgin olive oil.
Bolgheri Winery, Bolgheri
The Bolgheri wine cellars date from 1796. Both renovated cement tanks as well as French oak barriques are used for ageing. Total production is less than 100,000 bottles and just two labels, Castello di Bolgheri and Varvara are produced.
