Amalfi Coast Hiking Tour

Italy's fabled Amalfi Coast may be one of the world's greatest drives, but the views are even better from the quiet footpaths high above the Mediterranean Sea. These ancient trails crisscross the coast and are among the most spectacular walks of Italy. This hiking tour features the best of the Amalfi coast. An Italian guide shows us the marvels of Pompeii. We spend a day exploring the island of Capri. Coastal footpaths lead to spectacular views of mountains and sea. Olives and lemons abound. You will want to try a granita al limone (a lemon flavored Italian ice). Over dinner you can savor authentic southern Italian cooking and fresh local seafood. Sipping a limoncello while watching the sun slowly dip behind the sea you will be glad you came.

Daily Itinerary

Day 1:  Sorrento

Rendezvous at our Sorrento hotel. A quick drive takes us Marina del Cantone where we start our warm-up hike. We stroll across a bluff with views across the sea to the island of Capri. A steep descent leads to Ieranto Bay, the most pristine coastline between Sorrento and Amalfi. If the weather is warm you can swim in the crystalline, turquoise waters. The trail back passes a 15th Century Saracen watch tower.

Day 2:  Capri and Sorrento

A fast hydrofoil speeds us across the bay to Capri. Visit the beautiful Blue Grotto with its magical incandescent waters. Take a chairlift up Monte Solare for panoramic views. Explore Villa San Michelle, a perfectly preserved Roman Imperial Villa. For additional hiking we can take a coastal footpath to the remains of a Roman Emperor's villa.

Daily Itinerary

Day 3:  Pompeii and Positano

Visit the famous ruins of Pompeii with an Italian guide. In 79 AD Mount Vesuvius erupted burying the town under 30 feet of mud and ash. Today you can explore the excavated homes and businesses gaining a rich insight into the daily life of Romans 2,000 years ago. After lunch we transfer to our hotel in Positano.

Day 4, 5 and 6:  Pompeii and Positano

Transfer to Ravello for a two-night stay. High above the sea Ravello is a stylish little town that is known for ravishing gardens and the best views of the Amalfi coast. We explore the Villa Cimbrone with its incredible Terrace of Infinity. We hike the Path of the Mills stopping to see waterfalls in a national park and ancient paper mills. The next day we hike the Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei). This is the Amalfi's most spectacular footpath with breathtaking views over the entire peninsula. At the tour's end we shuttle you to Naples where frequent train connections make for an easy departure.
