Costa Brava Bike Tour, Catalonia Spain

The Costa Brava Bike Tour has all the elements you look for in a European bike tour, quiet backroads, beautiful scenery, rich history, historic towns, and fabulous cuisine. This tour starts in Girona, just 40-minutes north of Barcelona by high-speed rail. Girona’s temperate climate, gorgeous surroundings, and abundance of pro cyclists have made it a European cycling Mecca. From Girona we ride southwest on a rail-to-trail bike path. We cycle scenic coastal roads through thick pine forests and whitewashed towns. We spend five nights in seaside hotels. We explore perfectly preserved Medieval villages and visit the ruins of a Roman city from the 6th century AD. We tour a family-run winery and sample their wines over a picnic lunch. The tour ends in Figueres. Stay an extra day in Figueres if you want to see the Salvador Dalí museum.

Daily Itinerary

Day 7:  Cadaqués
Leaving l’Escala we visit the ruins of Empúries, a UNESCO site where Greek and Roman civilizations existed side by side. Cresting a big hill in the Cap de Creus Natural Park we roll into Cadaqués, an ancient fishing village on a broad bay. Our hotel sits directly above a charming little sandy beach.

Day 8:  Cadaqués
Cadaqués is an ideal place to unwind, eat fresh seafood, and savor the views from our waterfront hotel. We take a rest day here. In the morning we tour the home of Salvador Dalí. If you want to bike, we have a short loop ride to a coastal lighthouse.

Day 9:  Figueres
Our last ride takes us into the rolling landscape of the Emporda wine region below the majestic Pyrenees. We tour a family-run winery where we enjoy a picnic accompanied by full-bodied reds. The day ends with a flat ride into Figueres. Over a group dinner we toast our Spanish adventure.

Day 10:  Figueres
Our bike tour ends in Figueres. Stay an extra day to visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum or continue your travels. Barcelona can be reached in just 55 minutes by a high-speed train.

Note:  The Dalí museum is very popular. If you want to visit, reserve your tickets online well in advance.

Day 1:  Girona

We rendezvous at our Girona hotel after lunch, and meet a guide for a walking tour. Strolling down cobbled streets we learn about Girona’s rich Roman and Medieval history. We stop for an aperitivo, before returning to our hotel and our group dinner.

Day 2:  Girona

Our first ride follows the Ter River into the Catalonian countryside. This trail ride is mostly flat and without traffic. Half of the loop is on quiet greenways. It’s a peaceful loop that’s perfect for getting used to our bikes.

Day 3:  Girona to Sant Feliu de Guíxols

We cycle from Girona to the Mediterranean Sea following a rail-to-trail greenway. This is a 40 km traffic-free bike path built on a former narrow-gauge railway line. We roll through small towns before arriving at out hotel in San Feliu de Guíxols.

Day 4:  Sant Feliu de Guíxols to Tossa de Mar loop
The road between Sant Feliu de Guíxols and Tossa de Mar goes up and down. It’s twisty and turny, and has the best views over the Mediterranean Sea. The tarmac is smooth, the traffic is usually light, and the miradors (viewpoints) are spectacular.

Day 5:  Sant Feliu de Guíxols to Begur

Today’s ride is short, leaving you time in the afternoon to enjoy our seaside hotel. We roll past beaches separated by low headlands. The last 9 km have two big climbs along a rocky coast. We cycle through verdant marine pine forests before arriving at our hotel on the edge of a scenic bay.

Day 6:  L'Escala
We ride north up the coast. Along the way we visit two perfectly preserved medieval towns. These towns are right out of a fairy tale, with castles, walls, and even a moat. Enjoy lunch al fresco in a scenic plaza. Our ride ends at our beachfront hotel in l’Escala.
