Costa Brava Bike Tour, Catalonia Spain
The Costa Brava Bike Tour has all the elements you look for in a European bike tour, quiet backroads, beautiful scenery, rich history, historic towns, and fabulous cuisine. This tour starts in Girona, just 40-minutes north of Barcelona by high-speed rail. Girona’s temperate climate, gorgeous surroundings, and abundance of pro cyclists have made the town a cycling Mecca. From Girona we ride west to the coast where we spend three nights in seaside hotels. We explore perfectly preserved Medieval villages and visit the ruins of a Roman city from the 6th century AD. We tour a family-run winery and sample their wines over a picnic lunch. The tour ends in Figueres. Stay an extra day in Figueres if you want to see the Salvador Dalí museum.

Day 4: Cadaqués
Leaving l’Escala we visit the ruins of Ampurias, a UNESCO World Heritage site where Greek and Roman civilizations existed side by side. Later we ride through enchanting Empuriabrava, Europe’s largest residential marina with 24 km of man-made canals. Cresting a big hill in the Cap de Creus Natural Park we roll into Cadaqués, an old fishing village on a broad bay. While in Cadaqués you can visit the house of Salvador Dalí.

Day 5: Figueres
Our last ride takes us to a remote fishing village called El Port de la Selva. Turning inland we enter the rolling landscape of the Emporda wine region below the majestic Pyrenees. We stop and tour a family-run winery where we enjoy a picnic accompanied by a full-bodied red. The day ends with a flat ride into Figueres, home of the Dalí Theatre-Museum. Our hotel is in the historic center close to the museum. If you want to visit the museum we encourage you to spend an extra night in Figueres. Over a group dinner we toast our Spanish adventure.

Day 6: Figueres
Our bike tour ends in Figueres. Stay an extra day to visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum or continue your travels. Barcelona can be reached in just 55 minutes by a high-speed train.
Note: The Dalí museum is very popular. If you want to visit reserve your tickets online well in advance.
Day 1: Girona
Check into our Girona hotel in the early afternoon. Girona has a rich architectural history that can easily be explored by foot. Cross a pedestrian bridge over the Onyar River for picture perfect views of Girona’s colorful waterfront facades. Wander the Força Vella (Old Fortress) where you will find a 15th Century Gothic cathedral and one of Europe's best-preserved medieval Jewish communities. Try a new gelato flavor on La Rambla de la Libertad, Girona’s main pedestrian street. The day ends with a group dinner.

Day 2: Begur
A bike path leads us out of town following the Ter River into the sleepy rolling countryside. The path ends and we continue on quiet dirt roads. Our destination is a sprawling seaside hotel in the town of Begur. Our hotel sits on a small cliff overlooking the Mediterranean sea. Many rooms have magnificent views over the azure waters. Two inviting sandy beaches are just steps away from the hotel.

Day 3: L'Escala
We ride north up the coast. Along the way we visit two perfectly preserved medieval towns, Peretallada and Ullastret. These towns are right out of a fairy tale, with castles, walls, and even a moat. Wander the curved stone streets and enjoy a refreshment in an ancient town square. Our ride ends on the beach in l’Escala. This village sits on one of the most beautiful bays in the world, according to UNESCO. L’Escala has a beautiful sandy beach and a well preserved historic center.
