Shimoda, Croatia Bike Tour

Croatia’s Dalmation Coast is one of the most dramatic shorelines in Europe where coastal mountains sweep down to the azure waters of the Adriatic Sea. This bike tour starts in Split, a bustling coastal city and home to Diocletian’s Palace, one of the most spectacular Roman structures still standing. On this bike tour we island hop, with overnights on two of Croatia’s most picturesque islands, Hvar and Korcula. Immerse yourself in Croatia's rich cultural tapestry influenced by Greek, Roman, Venetian, and Austro-Hungarian traditions.  We dive headfirst into this culture with an olive mill visit, a wine tasting, an oyster farm excursion, and walking tours of Split and Dubrovnik. The cycling will be scenic and varied. Gentle uphills will lead to spectacular views across the islands. Coastal backroads will take you to ancient fishing villages. The tour ends in Dubrovnik, the Dalmation coast’s most captivating city. Dubrovnik’s Old Town is one of the world’s most perfectly preserved medieval cities.

Day 5 and 6:  Korcula Island

A speedy catamaran takes us from Hvar to the island of Korcula. We cycle down the coast following a quiet road on the water’s edge, stopping for lunch in Račišće, a picturesque port spread around a broad bay. Our beachfront hotel sits above a scenic beach 2 miles from Korcula's old town. We will offer van shuttles to the old town. Like a mini-Dubrovnik, the old town is tucked behind massive walls on a small peninsula. Inside the walls you will find 13th Century buildings separated by narrow winding streets. The following day we ride to a family-run winery and sample their white wines made with a Grk grapes, a native Croatian grape that thrives on the island’s sandy shores. After the winery we ride to a wide sandy beach for a picnic with a view. Relax at the beach before pedaling back to our seaside hotel.

Day 7:  Zuljana

A short ferry ride takes us back to the mainland. We climb the Pelisac hill and cross a high valley. We roll through a dark tunnel and arrive at a hidden coastal road. This quiet road offers spectacular sea and mountain views as it winds through steep vineyards. We stop for lunch in Trstenik where you can eat outdoors at a seaside table. Our ride ends in Žuljana a small fishing village with a pebble beach that faces a bright turquoise sea. There are no hotels in this village of 300 people, so we stay in apartments owned and run by a local family. In the evening you can eat local cuisine at a mom-and-pop seaside restaurant. Walking around the village at night you are likely to hear cicadas or coyotes.

Day 8:  Dubrovnik

You ride to Mali Ston, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Mali Ston is an amazing place. It has a 5.5 km stone wall, Europe’s longest, dating from the 14th Century. It has salt flats that have been in use for two millennia, and it has a sea channel where world class oysters are produced. Forty families have licenses to harvest oysters in the pristine waters. The patriarch of one of these families takes us out on his old wooden boat. He pulls fresh oysters and mussels from the sea and prepares them before our eyes. If you like oysters and mussels, these will most likely be the best you have ever had. Our day ends with a shuttle to our hotel in Dubrovnik.

Day 9:  Dubrovnik

Our bike tour ends after breakfast. We encourage you to extend your stay to visit Old Town Dubrovnik. The Old Town is a stunning, UNESCO World Heritage site known for its imposing stone walls, fabulous baroque architecture, and sparkling Mediterranean scenery. You could move to a hotel in the Old Town or stay in our tour hotel (1.5 miles away). Flights are available from Dubrovnik, or you can return to the Split Airport which offers more international connections. The trip from Dubrovnik to Split by private shuttle, bus or ferry takes about 5 hours.

Day 1:  Split

We rendezvous in the morning at our Split hotel. Our hotel is just a short walk from Split’s main attraction, Diocletian’s Palace, a palace built in the third century AD for a Roman Emperor. A local guide walks us through the city center unravelling a rich history shaped by the Romans, Venetians, Ottomans and Austrians. Our walking tour is followed by a group lunch. After lunch a warm-up ride takes us through a large park overlooking the city center. We cycle uphill and are rewarded with spectacular coastal views. Before leaving the park, we stop at a hillside café for some cold refreshments on a scenic terrace.

Day 2:  Brac Island

A ferry takes us to the island of Brac. We cycle to Skrip, the island’s oldest village dating back 3,000 years. Skrip has a 16th century fortress and a delightful olive oil museum. We tour the museum and see an ancient olive mill at work. After our tour we have lunch al fresco at the museum. Lunch is a smorgasbord including olive spreads, local cheeses, cold cuts and homemade marmalades. Leaving Skrip a coastal ride takes us to a pristine beach for a refreshing swim. The day ends with a ferry ride back to Split.

Day 3 and 4:  Hvar Island

We take a ferry to the island of Hvar. A pretty ride on quiet backroads leads to two picturesque harbor villages. The second village is called Vrboska, and resembles a tiny Venice. We have lunch next to a canal in Vrboska. In the afternoon a long slow climb takes us to the other side of the island and to the town of Hvar. Our hotel is nestled in a cove above a sandy beach. Our rooms face the sea and the hotel’s lovely infinity pools. The following day we take a break from cycling. A guide takes us on a private walking tour of historic Hvar. In the afternoon you are on your own, walk 25 minutes to Pokonji Dol Beach for lunch at a scenic beachfront restaurant or relax at an outdoor cafe in St Stephens Square.
